Periurethral Bulking
Periurethral bulking is a medical procedure used to treat urinary incontinence, which is the involuntary loss of urine. The procedure involves injecting bulking agents into the tissue surrounding the urethra, which is the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the outside of the body.
The bulking agents increase the size of the tissue around the urethra and help to close the bladder outlet, reducing the likelihood of urine leakage.
How is Periurethral bulking done?
Periurethral bulking is a medical procedure that is typically performed in a hospital or clinic setting. Here are the general steps involved in the procedure:
- Preparing for the procedure: The patient may be given instructions on what to eat and drink before the procedure, and they may be asked to empty their bladder before the procedure begins.
- Anesthesia: Periurethral bulking is usually performed under local anesthesia. This involves numbing the area around the urethra using a local anesthetic injection. In some cases, sedation may be used to help the patient relax.
- Insertion of a cystoscope: A small tube with a camera on the end, called a cystoscope, is inserted through the urethra to visualize the area.
- Injection of bulking agents: The bulking agents are injected through a needle into the tissue surrounding the urethra at multiple points. The number and location of injections depend on the patient’s anatomy and the type of bulking agent used.
- Evaluation: After the bulking agents are injected, the cystoscope is used to evaluate the results and ensure that the bulking agents are evenly distributed around the urethra.
- Recovery: The patient may be able to go home the same day, but they may need to take antibiotics to prevent infection.
The entire procedure usually takes less than 30 minutes to complete. The results of periurethral bulking can last for several months to several years, depending on the type of bulking agent used.
Will the Periurethral bulking procedure hurt
Periurethral bulking is usually done under local anaesthetic, in which case you will be awake during the procedure but should experience minimal discomfort. You can discuss the anaesthetic options with the doctor.
WHAT IS THE DOWNTIME?
Once at home, patients typically return to normal activities within 24 hours.
